Film Independent Announces the 2009 Spirit Award Nominees and Mississippi’s own leads the Pack
Jackson, Mississippi’s own Actress Tarra McGowan-Riggs, was recently named Best Actress of the 46th Annual Gijón International Film Festival and honored with a nomination for Best Female Lead 2009 Spirit Award by Film Independent for her role as Marlee in the indie film Ballast.
Ballast, a film shot in Mississippi and starring an all Mississippi cast, received six nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards, the top awards for independent film on the West Coast and also nominated for four awards at the Gotham Awards in New York City, the top awards for independent film on the East Coast. The film won two awards at the renowned Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It has since been well-received at festivals around the world and is beginning to make appearances on "Ten Best" lists.
The Independent Spirit Awards will be held February 21, 2009 in Los Angeles. The Event will be televised without commercial interruption on IFC Channel with a replay on AMC Channel, check your local listings.
